BALLET ARIEL CELEBRATES 25 YEARS WITH SPRING PERFORMANCES OF “AN AMERICAN IN PARIS” AND “APPALACHIAN SPRING”
Ballet Ariel rounds out its Silver Anniversary celebration season with a performance featuring “An American in Paris,” “Appalachian Spring,” and “Dances from Le Corsaire,” April 13, 27 and 28.
After successful Fall and Winter productions, Ballet Ariel completes its 25th season with three ballets at venues in Denver and Lakewood.
“An American in Paris,” Ballet Ariel-style, combines Gershwin’s sweeping orchestral classic with a charming storyline to create a narrative ballet about a young American woman’s first visit to Paris. She is transformed by the magic and vibrancy of the beautifully historic and undeniably romantic city. Her awakening to life and its possibilities is exhibited in the jazzy undertones of Gershwin’s score. Ballet Ariel’s Director Ilena Norton, and Ballet Ariel’s choreographer Gregory Gonzales, have created whimsical dances that capture the joy of Paris.
“Appalachian Spring,” as explored by Norton, is a fresh interpretation of the music composed by Aaron Copland for modern dance pioneer Martha Graham. The ballet depicts the wedding day at a Pennsylvania farmhouse in the early 20th century. The young couple experiences a range of emotions over the course of the day many couples can relate to – apprehension, excitement, and finally, serenity. Ballet Ariel brings new life to the American classic from one of the great contemporary composers of the 20th century, incorporating classical movement and a dramatic narrative. Performed on pointe, Norton’s ballet includes choreography from Gregory Gonzales, whose contemporary style integrates wonderfully.
“Le Corsaire” (The Pirate) selected dances will also be part of Ballet Ariel’s Spring program. In its full three acts, the ballet is the story of Conrad who falls in love with the beautiful Medora during the Ottoman Empire. She and the three Odalisques are purchased by the Pasha for his harem. Conrad rescues her and they sail off for their life ahead, together. Dances from the ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa are staged for Ballet Ariel by Oleg Dedogryuk, assisted by Patricia Renzetti.
The Silver Anniversary Dance Collections run the following dates and locations:
April 13, 7:30pm at the Cleo Parker Robinson Theatre, 119 Park Ave. W., in Denver – 80205.
April 27, 7:30pm and April 28, 2:00pm at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 S. Allison Pkwy., Lakewood – 80226.
Tickets are $25-$35 with discounts for seniors, students and children.
For information on purchasing tickets, please visit the Ballet Ariel website at www.balletariel.org or call 303-945-4388.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana: “Fronteras”
Tickets start at $25 at Lakewood.org/LCCPresents, 303-987-7845 or the Box Office
Electrifying flamenco dance highlights the dynamic interplay between the dancers and live musicians in a performance that The New York Times says is “solid entertainment.” Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, one of the premier flamenco companies in the U.S., will be in residence for a week at the Lakewood Cultural Center including performances at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 17 and 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 18. Tickets start at $25 and are on sale now at 303-987-7845, Lakewood.org/LCCPresents or the Lakewood Cultural Center Box Office, 470 S. Allison Parkway (Wadsworth and West Alameda Avenue). Both performances feature the full-length “Fronteras” program. A special group rate of $20 per ticket is available for groups of 10 or more for the matinee. For information, call the group sales line at 303-987-7864.
What is stronger: What unites us or what separates us? Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana explores these questions and our natural drive to push beyond obstacles and seek deeper relationships. In the “Fronteras” program dancers are confined within taped “borders” on the floor representing the imposition of boundaries, social and artistic, and the choreography explores how such limits are transcended.
“You never know what you’re going to see, and that’s why audiences keep coming back…There aren’t any stars, or weak links, either. The eight dancers are remarkably equal, each holding attention in a distinctive way” writes Brian Seibert of The New York Times.
Flamenco Vivo has evolved to become an organization rather than only a dance company and continues to be dedicated to arts in education. During the residency week, the troupe will host a Flamenco Guitar Masterclass which features instruction in flamenco guitar techniques, tonalities and rhythms. The class is open to ages 14 and up and is offered on April 17 at 7 p.m. A Flamenco Movement Workshop will also be offered for active adults over age 55 on April 16 at 11:15 a.m. This class focuses on instruction in rhythmic handclaps, arm movements, body posturing and footwork tailored to the participant’s experience level. Registration and details about these unique opportunities are available at Lakewood.org/LCCPresents.
